Big multiplication with the area model

Break the rectangle into friendly pieces. Add the pieces.

What this skill is

The area model breaks a hard multiplication into friendly pieces. It generalises to fractions and to algebra, which the standard algorithm does not.

Three ways to teach it at home

  1. Draw the rectangle and split it at the tens. Four boxes, four easy multiplications, one addition.
  2. Estimate first: 24 × 36 is about 25 × 36, so about 900. Estimating catches place-value slips.
  3. Do not rush to the standard algorithm. The picture is what generalises.
