The area model breaks a hard multiplication into friendly pieces. It generalises to fractions and to algebra, which the standard algorithm does not.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Draw the rectangle and split it at the tens. Four boxes, four easy multiplications, one addition.
- Estimate first: 24 × 36 is about 25 × 36, so about 900. Estimating catches place-value slips.
- Do not rush to the standard algorithm. The picture is what generalises.
