Decimals extend place value to the right of the point. The most common error is assuming that more digits means a bigger number.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Line up the decimal points and compare place by place, starting from the left.
- Use money and a metre stick. 0.5 of a metre and 0.25 of a metre settle the argument physically.
- Watch for "longer means bigger". It is the most common decimal bug and it is invisible until you probe for it.
