Heart words: primer set
Free practice for heart words: primer set. It loads instantly, there is nothing to sign up for, and it stops after eight questions.
What this skill is
High-frequency words that appear constantly and contain parts that do not follow the usual rules. The regular parts are still mapped to sounds; only the irregular part is learned by heart.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Read the word, then map the parts that behave normally and mark the part that does not. "Said" — the s and d are regular; the middle is the heart part.
- Have them spell it out loud from memory, then check. Retrieval beats copying.
- Five words at a time, revisited over days. A list of forty in one sitting is a list of forty forgotten.
