What this skill is
A blend is different from a digraph: both sounds are still there, they are just close together. Words at this rung include black, block, clap, clip, flag.
Three ways to teach it at home
- Blends are not teams. You can still hear both sounds. Have them say each one and then squeeze.
- If the second sound of the blend keeps disappearing, slow down and add it back: "s...top", then "stop".
- Final blends are harder than initial ones. Do them separately and later.
