What a 7-year-old should know

Seven is the hinge. Up to here, what a child understands is limited by listening. From here it is limited by decoding — and the two swap places during this year.

01

Reading at 7

  • Long and short vowels in one and two syllable words (RF.2.3a)
  • Vowel teams and r-controlled vowels — ar, or, er, ir, ur (RF.2.3b)
  • Common prefixes and suffixes (RF.2.3d)
  • Irregularly spelled words read without sounding out (RF.2.3f)
  • Reads aloud with accuracy, phrasing and expression (RF.2.4a–b)

Typical fluency: about 50 words a minute in the autumn, 84 by midwinter, 100 by the end of the year.

02

Math at 7

  • Adds and subtracts within 20 from memory, not by counting on (2.OA.B.2)
  • Place value to 1000 (2.NBT.A.1–4)
  • Adds and subtracts within 100 fluently, and within 1000 (2.NBT.B.5, 2.NBT.B.7)
  • Odd and even, and arrays as the start of multiplication (2.OA.C.3–4)
  • Measures with standard units (2.MD.A.1–4)
  • Counts money and tells time to five minutes (2.MD.C.7–8)
03

Handwriting at 7

  • Mature dynamic grasp
  • Reversals should be largely gone — this is the year to act if they are not
  • Writes about 25 to 35 letters a minute
  • Size, spacing and sitting on the line are consistent enough to judge

Ladderbug teaches letter formation in motor order rather than alphabetical order, and checks where each stroke starts and which way it goes — not just whether the finished shape looks right.

What usually goes wrong at 7

The learning-to-read cliff

A child still working hard to decode stops picking up vocabulary from what they read, and the gap compounds every year after.

Counting on, tolerated

If addition facts never reach straight recall, every multi-step problem later will overrun working memory and look like a different problem.

Reversals finally noticed

They were ordinary at five and six, so nobody acted. Seven is the year they stop being ordinary.

05

Attention, memory and vocabulary at 7

8Minutes of attention on an adult-chosen task
5Numbers held in mind at once
5,000 to 6,000Root words understood

8 to 12 minutes, in returns rather than one unbroken stretch. Forward digit span 5. 5,000 to 6,000 root words. Morphology — prefixes, suffixes, roots — becomes the main engine from here.

Fluency figures are Hasbrouck & Tindal (2017) median words correct per minute. Vocabulary counts are root words (Biemiller & Slonim), not total words — total-word figures run two to three times higher and are much less reliable. These are midpoints across a very wide normal range, not targets.

Questions parents ask about 7-year-olds

What reading level should a 7-year-old be at?

Typical fluency: about 50 words a minute in the autumn, 84 by midwinter, 100 by the end of the year.

How long should a 7-year-old practise for?

About 8 to 12 minutes, in returns rather than one unbroken stretch. That is for a task an adult chose, which is the hard case. Ladderbug sessions are about twelve minutes and then they stop.

My 7-year-old seems behind. What now?

Start one step below where you think they are and move up only when it is easy. The most common cause of a stall at 7 is a gap further down, not a problem at the level they are on. Nothing here is a diagnosis — if you are worried, a teacher or an educational psychologist can assess properly.
