What a 10-year-old should know
Ten is the last year of primary maths, and the year a child decides whether they are "a maths person". Fraction division is usually where that decision gets made.
Reading at 10
- Reads any unfamiliar long word by its parts (RF.5.3a)
- Quotes accurately from a text to support an answer (RL/RI.5.1)
- Compares several accounts of the same event (RI.5.6)
- Pulls information together from several texts (RI.5.9)
Typical fluency: about 121 words a minute in the autumn, 133 midwinter, 146 by the end of the year.

Math at 10
- Multiplies multi-digit whole numbers fluently (5.NBT.B.5)
- Divides four digits by two digits (5.NBT.B.6)
- All four operations on decimals to hundredths (5.NBT.B.7)
- Adds and subtracts fractions with unlike denominators (5.NF.A.1–2)
- Multiplies and divides fractions (5.NF.B.4–7)
- Powers of ten, and order of operations (5.NBT.A.2, 5.OA.A.1–2)
- Volume, and the coordinate plane (5.MD.C.3–5, 5.G.A.1–2)
Handwriting at 10
- Handwriting is no longer a target — volume and endurance are
- Writing at length without the hand giving out is the thing to watch
By 10, handwriting should be automatic enough that it stops being the thing you practise. If it is not, go back to formation rather than to more writing.
Still reversing letters?
At 10 that is worth acting on rather than waiting out. The fix is making the two letters feel different to write, not more practice at telling them apart.
What usually goes wrong at 10
Keep-change-flip
Fraction division taught as a trick with no model is where mathematical confidence goes to die. The child can get the right answer and has no idea what they did.
Longer decimal, bigger number
The belief that 0.25 is larger than 0.5 is extremely common and survives into secondary school unless it is directly confronted.
Strategies instead of knowledge
Comprehension strategy instruction has small effects that saturate quickly. By ten the binding constraint is vocabulary and knowing things.
Attention, memory and vocabulary at 10
20 to 25 minutes. Forward digit span 6, backward 4 to 5. 8,000 to 9,000 root words, with roughly a two-to-one spread between the quarter of children who know the most and the quarter who know the least.
Fluency figures are Hasbrouck & Tindal (2017) median words correct per minute. Vocabulary counts are root words (Biemiller & Slonim), not total words — total-word figures run two to three times higher and are much less reliable. These are midpoints across a very wide normal range, not targets.
Questions parents ask about 10-year-olds
What reading level should a 10-year-old be at?
Typical fluency: about 121 words a minute in the autumn, 133 midwinter, 146 by the end of the year.
How long should a 10-year-old practise for?
About 20 to 25 minutes. That is for a task an adult chose, which is the hard case. Ladderbug sessions are about twelve minutes and then they stop.
My 10-year-old seems behind. What now?
Start one step below where you think they are and move up only when it is easy. The most common cause of a stall at 10 is a gap further down, not a problem at the level they are on. Nothing here is a diagnosis — if you are worried, a teacher or an educational psychologist can assess properly.
